Romaine lettuce linked to outbreak of E. coli in 13 states

Romaine lettuce linked to outbreak of E. coli in 13 states”

Since Dec. 14, the Canadian health agency has been urging consumers "to consider consuming other types of lettuce, instead of romaine lettuce, until more is known about the outbreak and the cause of contamination". But does this mean you should skip the romaine on your sandwich or in your salad?

The CDC investigation is ongoing, and not all the tests have been completed, Williams said.

The last confirmed onset of the illness in the US was December 8, Williams said.

The CDC is aware of 17 infections right now in 13 states - a group that runs the geographic gamut from the West Coast, though the Rust Belt, to the top of New England. At the time the Public Health Agency of Canada had identified the source of the outbreak as romaine lettuce.

It's unusual for Consumer Reports to issue a food warning when the CDC and FDA haven't issued a recall, Halloran said.

A new warning has been issued by Consumer Reports to avoid romaine lettuce while USA and Canadian health officials continue their investigation after 58 people were reported sick from E. coli infections, NBC News reported.

But Chapman was less certain about this recommendation.

These past two months, several people have been hospitalized, and two have died, after suffering an E.Coli infection most likely linked to Romain Lettuce.

Whole-genome sequencing comparing the isolates from Canada and the United States has shown that the same strain is involved and that a common food source probably the source, Williams said.

The total number of confirmed cases of E.Coli infection in the USA and Canada has risen to 58. "But we don't have enough evidence yet", said Wiliams, chief of the CDC's Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch. There's also been one reported death in Canada. Though the source of infection is still unknown, the CDC is investigating leafy greens and romaine lettuce.

Canada has been struck with an outbreak caused by the same strain of E. coli; people there became sick in early November through early December.

Consumer Reports is asking the Center for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration to work harder at warning people about the issue, NBC News reports.

Chapman suspects that officials will make an announcement soon about whether the US and Canadian outbreaks are indeed the same.
