Apple urged to study iPhone addiction in kids”

Apple is working on new parental controls to help parents control child addiction to their devices. Apple hasn't commented on the specifics of the letter, but in a statement the company pointed to controls that already exist that allow parents to install or delete apps, control in-app purchases and restrict access to certain websites.

Fadell also said that government regulations might be needed if these companies "don't step up".

Major investors in the Apple Corporation have been urging the iPhone maker to take action to slow the growing smart phone addiction among children. "By doing so, we believe Apple would once again be playing a pioneering role, this time by setting an example about the obligations of technology companies to their youngest customers". "It is also no secret that social media sites and applications for which the iPhone and iPad are a primary gateway are usually created to be as addictive and time-consuming as possible, as many of their original creators have publicly acknowledged".

- An American Psychological Association survey that found that of over 3,500 US parents, 58% say they worry about the influence of social media on their child's physical and mental health; 48% say regulating their child's screen time is a "constant battle"; and 58% say they feel like their child is "attached" to their phone or tablet.

The two investors said Apple should study how technology affects child development and report its findings, much as it would handle environmental and supply chain issues.

The letter cited early research showing some negative effects phone usage has had on children, such as being distracted in the classroom, higher risks of depression and suicide, and sleep deprivation.

Among their proposals to Apple: Establish a committee of experts, including child development specialists; offer Apple's "vast information resources" to researchers; and enhance mobile device software so that parents have more options to protect their children's health. At the moment parents can control a number of things on the handsets.

The Apple letter is the start of a bigger push by one of the investors, Jana, to focus on socially responsible investing, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

Most parents use iPhones and iPads as learning tools and babysitting devices sometimes cause they work very well keeping their kid's attention. It also added that it's also making sure that the App Store and other digital content areas are clear of offensive material including pornography, while labels should help the user identify age-appropriate content.
