CES 2018: Google-Daydream Powered Standalone VR Headset Coming This Year”

Lenovo has just announced the Mirage Solo VR headset, which is the first stand-alone VR headset based on Google's Daydream VR ecosystem.

The Lenovo Mirage Solo has many features commonly found in smartphones.

The Mirage Solo is set to compete with Facebook's ( FB ) $200 Oculus Go, which is an untethered, no-phone headset as well. The VR headset is equipped with a single 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 LCD panel with 75Hz refresh rate and two Fresnel-Aspheric lenses to provide a wide 110-degree field of view. It sports 4 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM) and 64 GB of storage for apps and multimedia content, with SD card slot to expand the storage to up to 256 GB.

The Mirage Solo uses a built-in tech suite dubbed WorldSense, which is created to allow the stand-alone device to track your movements without the need for external sensors positioned in your home (as we've seen with the HTC Vive, for example). Lenovo has also included a controller with the device that allows users motion control. The device's inside-out positional tracking technology will be able to track the user's position in space through built-in tracking cameras and sensors. The small remote features a clickable trackpad and volume rocker, plus can work as a baseball bat and more.

Aside from the VR headset, Google and Lenovo also debuted the new Lenovo Mirage Camera, which also comes with Daydream technology.

Lenovo President and COO Gianfranco Lanci sat down with Investor's Business Daily while at CES to discuss the company's new products, including the Mirage Solo.

Google originally showcased its concept for a standalone VR headset during its annual I/O conference in May.

The Mirage Solo packs numerous same hardware specs as a high-end smartphone, including a processing chip, a high-resolution display, memory, internal storage, external storage, cameras and a massive battery.
