Zuckerberg Makes Fixing Facebook His 'Personal Challenge' For 2018

Zuckerberg Makes Fixing Facebook His 'Personal Challenge' For 2018”

In what is Mark Zuckerberg's now-traditional New Year speech, the Facebook supremo pledged to fix the social network's many problems which bubbled up in 2017.

Zuckerberg has said that the world's largest social network has "a lot of work to do" and that fixing Facebook is his personal challenge for 2018. So what are the issues he's talking about? Zuckerberg wrote in a post Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, that he now wants to focus on protecting Facebook users from abuse, defending against interference by nation-states and "making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent".

"We won't prevent all mistakes or abuse, but we now make too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools", Zuckerberg writes.

Facebook was under much scrutiny in 2017 for a litany of issues, including admitting Russians bought ads with the intent to sway the 2016 US elections.

Writing about how the previous year saw many people lose trust in social media and tech companies, Zuckerberg noted the growing importance of de-centralizing forces, like the rise of cryptocurrency.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has welcomed the idea to integrate crypto technology in Facebook services, "Grateful as ever for your leadership and look forward to working with you and our colleagues on these important issues this year".

First, consider that almost 100 percent of Facebook's revenue comes from online advertising, while other sources, like mobile gaming, have fallen in recent years. He writes that he's interested in studying their impact and "how best to use them in our services". David Marcus, the company's vice president of messaging products, joined the board of Coinbase Inc., one of the largest crypto exchanges, late previous year. In the past his New Year resolutions have included wearing a tie every day and killing his own food.

He has been doing this since 2009. That first year the economy was in a deep recession and Facebook was not yet profitable.

Zuckerberg is going to bring together groups of experts to discuss and help work through these challenges.

He said, "For example, one of the most interesting questions in technology right now is about centralization vs decentralization".

Technology had the promise of putting more power into people's hands but many people had now lost faith in that promise and thought technology actually centralised power, he said.

Some of the Facebook users in response have demanded to use Bitcoin as Facebook tips, Beck Wiltshire said, "Add cryptocurrency to Facebook with the option to "tip" users of great content or videos with Bitcoin. With the rise of a small number of big tech companies - and governments using technology to watch their citizens - many people now believe technology only centralizes power rather than decentralizes it".
