Bharat Biotech's typhoid vaccine gets World Health Organization prequalification

Typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) are innovative products that have longer-lasting immunity than older vaccines, require fewer doses, and can be given to young children through routine childhood immunization programs, says the WHO. The development of this conjugate vaccine has taken 14 years but it has proved to be effective. Meanwhile, results, published in the Lancet previous year show Tybpar TCV to be 87 percent effective and can also be administered to children over six months old.

SAGE also called for the introduction of TCV to be prioritized for countries with the highest burden of typhoid disease or of antibiotic resistance to Salmonella Typhi, the bacterium that causes the disease. In October 2017, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on immunization, which advises World Health Organization, recommended TCV for routine use in children over 6 months of age in typhoid endemic countries. The highest burden of typhoid is due to salmonella typhi.

The total burden of typhoid is 11 to 20 million cases globally.

Typhoid is an acute illness associated with fever. Most typhoid cases in the United States of America are from people who have recently traveled internationally. "For communities where typhoid is common and drug-resistant strains of typhoid are increasing, this presents an opportunity to protect children and adults, save lives and curb risky antimicrobial resistance". Unlocking the potential of vaccines through partnership, Sabin has built a robust ecosystem of funders, innovators, implementers, practitioners, policy makers and public stakeholders to advance its vision of a future free from preventable diseases. There are two vaccines to prevent typhoid. Now available typhoid vaccines fail to provide long term protection and protection for children below 2 years of age.

The WHO pre-qualification enables the procurement and supplies of this life saving vaccine to Unicef, the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) and GAVI (a vaccine alliance) supported countries. "Recognising the importance of sustained vaccine procurement for low-income and low-middle income countries, we have offered a further price reduction to around $ 1.0 or below/dose, post procurement of 100 million doses for lower and lower-middle income countries", said Dr Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Biotech.
