French retailers sold baby milk despite possible Salmonella contamination

French retailers sold baby milk despite possible Salmonella contamination”

"This is a major malfunction in the process of recall by the managers, to whom responsibility lies", the minister said in the margins of a press conference that he presented for the presentation of the global exhibition of agricultural products expected to be held by the end of February, every year, in Paris.

Meanwhile, Leclerc is known to have sold nearly 1,000 of the affected products.

The Systeme-U, Auchan, and Casino retail giants also sold the products.

But even after that, the products were still available at supermarkets and other retailers in the country.

He said the ban on Lactalis products from the factory would continue indefinitely, while the contamination was investigated.

Le Maire said he would meet French supermarket operators later on Thursday and meet Lactalis management on Friday to discuss the matter.

But on Thursday Lactalis spokesman Michel Nalet said the company had "worked in ideal collaboration with state agencies" since the start of the crisis in December.

The firm also apologised again to parents of the children who have fallen ill.

President Macron said that "if punishment is required, then there will be punishment". A total of 35 infants were infected with salmonella in France after drinking milk or another baby food product made from this plant.

A government report last week said food safety inspectors had failed to detect Salmonella during a routine inspection, three months before the recall.

Lactalis - whose Picot, Milumel and Taranis brands were affected by the recall - has stopped operations at a factory in northwestern France in order to try and eliminate the risk to the public. Salmonella can cause severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and sever dehydration. The illness, caused by intestinal bacteria from farm animals, is especially risky for the very young and elderly because it can cause severe dehydration.

The company took internal recall procedures which led to the removal and destruction of more than 36,000 products but said the 52 products had "escaped the vigilance" of its teams.
