Mother of Young Black H&M Model Unbothered by Offensive Ad

Mother of Young Black H&M Model Unbothered by Offensive Ad”

H&M released an ad featuring a black American boy wearing a sweatshirt that says, "Coolest Monkey in the Jungle", which garnered backlash from Twitter users and celebrities-but the boy's mom doesn't seem to care.

And in a message to make-up artist Lovette Jallow, who slammed H&M, she adds: "Everyone is entitled to their opinion".

"You can not try to defend my son and use the same words to describe me". The advert sparked severe negative reactions on social media, with people calling it racist, negligent and inappropriate, and accusing the brand of lack of awareness of social issues.

Singer The Weeknd, who has a clothing line at the retailer, says he was "shocked and embarrassed" by the photo and that he would end his ties with the company.

The outrage prompted H&M to remove the image from its United Kingdom and USA websites and to issue a statement saying it was "deeply sorry".

But now Terry Mango, mum of five-year-old Liam who modelled the hoodie, has said that she's been the victim of racist abuse online - all because she defended the hoodie. "This is one of hundreds of outfits my son has modeled. stop crying Wolf all the time, unnecessary issue".

Ms Mango's uncle, Kenyan-born music promoter Clay Onyango, said the family had spoken to H&M and believed the brand had not meant to be racist but that there are still questions that need to be answered.

He told Gulf News: 'I think they overlooked it. Maybe it's just one of those mistakes that one makes.

The campaign group Models Of Diversity, which pushes for more diversification across the industry, said H&M should be "ashamed".

New York Post reports that in a series of Facebook tweets, Terry Mango, of Stockholm, Sweden, said not only did she support that advertisement, but that people should simply "get over it" and stop being "sensitive". "We as African Americans will always have to break barriers, prove people wrong and work even harder to prove we belong but guess what, that's what we love because the benefits at the end of the road are so lovely!"

'We're deeply sorry that the picture was taken and we also regret the actual print. It continues, "We have taken down the image and we have removed the garment in question from sale".

The image appeared on the British version of the Swedish retailer's website.

It issued a statement apologising for any offence caused.

"We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top".

Style blogger Stephanie Yeboah was the first to notice the controversial advert which has not been removed by H&M.
