Nikon 180-400mm f/4: $12400 for Nikon's First Built-In Teleconverter

Nikon 180-400mm f/4: $12400 for Nikon's First Built-In Teleconverter”

When paired with a DX-format DSLR, the focal length is equivalent to 270-600mm and with the teleconverter, it goes to a whopping 378-840mm.

From stadium to mountainside, the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 lets you own every advantage out in the field.

Inside the lens is a 1.4x teleconverter that allows it to be turned into a 252-560mm lens at the flip of a switch.

Nikon says that when using the AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm F4E TC1.4 FL ED VR on cameras equipped with Nikon's advanced 153-point AF system (such as the Nikon D5, Nikon D500 and Nikon D850), the outer row of AF points are activated as cross-type sensors to enhance the AF coverage throughout the frame.

The teleconverter switch can easily be controlled by one finger, allowing photographers to change range without taking their eyes off the viewfinder. Operation that does not interrupt or interfere with shooting has been taken into consideration with the design of the lens.

As you'd expect for a lens of this calibre, the construction includes the use of durable magnesium alloy, while the lens is also sealed against dust and moisture.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens will be available starting in March 2018 with a price tag of $12,400. Along with this fluorite element are eight Extra Low Dispersion elements (double the amount of its predecessor), Nano Crystal and Super Integrated coatings. For example, bearings have been adopted for the tripod collar ring, enabling smooth transition between horizontal and vertical shooting orientation, and the zoom ring has been positioned for easy operation while the user holds onto the tripod collar.

The VR (Vibration Reduction) anti-shake mechanism offers a normal and sports mode, with up to four stops of compensation to help create sharp images. The VR modes include SPORT mode that provides a stable viewfinder image when shooting sporting events and other moving subjects. Nikon has also improved the motor drive's AF tracking algorithm to help the lens lock focus on fast-moving subjects better.
