Seth Meyers strikes right tone at Golden Globes

Seth Meyers strikes right tone at Golden Globes”

Late-night TV show host Seth Meyers on Sunday wasted little time tackling the sexual harassment scandals that rocked Hollywood past year, taking aim at several disgraced notable people during his opening monologue at the 75th annual Golden Globes awards show in Beverly Hills, Calif.

"Good evening ladies and REMAINING gentlemen!" began Meyers.

"Happy new year Hollywood!". But in the wake of multiple sexual harassment and assault scandals within the Hollywood industry (and beyond), this isn't a typical year. He was referring to disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein at that moment, but his stage patter throughout was created to put all the men in the room on notice ... himself included.

He may not be Hollywood's most powerful Seth, but Meyers was well aware that he'd be a powerful force in setting the trend for future emcees as awards season rolls on and the #TimesUp movement continues to make its presence felt on the red carpet and beyond.

Meyers then added that this was the year of "big little lies and get out and also the television series Big Little Lies and the movie Get Out" and added that it's been years "since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood". "A special hello to hosts of other upcoming awards shows who are watching me tonight like the first dog they shot into outer space". There was an upside, though: This was the first time in three months men weren't terrified to hear their names read out loud.

Good thing Meyers has the smarts to deal with current events in a way that never seemed too inappropriate.

"Is a Harvey Weinstein joke appropriate right now?"

"Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight because, well, I heard rumors that he's insane and hard to work with", Meyers continued.

Instead, he directed his sharpest barbs at accused harassers Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein (whom he predicted, 20 years from now, would be the first person ever booed during the "In Memoriam" segment). The crowd made a noise. "Oh, was that too mean?" continued Meyers in a southern accent.

Meyers recognized that some people thought it would be better for a woman to host the 2018 Golden Globes, but he added that it was OK he was hosting since he's a man with no power in Hollywood. Remember when he was the one causing trouble with North Korea?

Speaking of Donald Trump, the President of the United States played third fiddle in Meyers opening monologue, which undoubtedly infuriated the insatiably media-hungry Trump, and about which he may already have tweeted about with un-hinged furor.

According to Meyers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - the governing body that picks the Golden Globe winners - has a name that's seemingly created to anger the president.
