Taking ibuprofen may limit sperm production, study suggests”

The "Luteinizing hormones" are the ones affected by the high intake of ibuprofen which is responsible for commanding the testicles to manufacture testosterone. The hormonal changes that it induces is commonly associated with sterility. And, while testosterone levels are normal during compensated hypogonadism, it's not a good condition to have. The drop in testosterone can cause testicles to shrink, as well as making it more hard to get someone pregnant.

There has been research recently that shows that infertility among men in general is growing.

Ibuprofen is one the most well-known pain medications in the West, taken by millions of people every day.

Ibuprofen has always been a drug of choice for chronic pain and arthritis.

The study was published on Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Data from almost 450,000 patients has linked five forms of painkillers - ibuprofen, celecoxib, diclofenac, naproxen, and rofecoxib - to heart problems. The study, which took place in Denmark and France, involved 31 men under the age of 35. Some of the men took 1200 milligrams of ibuprofen daily, which is the maximum amount directed, over a six-week period. The other 17 participants received placebo or inert pills posing as the drug.

John Smith, chief executive of the Proprietary Association of Great Britain, the United Kingdom trade association representing manufacturers of branded over-the-counter medicines, said: "The researchers highlight that further studies would be required to determine the possible effect ibuprofen could have on human reproductive and physical disorders, specifically in men". With increased ibuprofen, testosterone and luteinizing hormones go out of control resulting in hypogonadism.

Male fertility is dropping around the world and the researchers wanted to see if ibuprofen might be contributing to this. Last year, scientists found out that sperm counts in western countries had declined by 50 percent in less than 40 years.

Again, it's important to emphasize this was a really small study that required two weeks of constant ibuprofen use before there was any indication that something was out of the ordinary.

This study also looked at a couple of other hormones produced by the testes and found that they, too, were reduced by ibuprofen.

Researchers told CNN that, while these effects were reversible, they were unsure of whether there were long-term health effects associated with the prolonged use of ibuprofen.

The best way to address a low testosterone level is with artificial hormones. "The decrease in the free testosterone/LH ratio resulted primarily from the increased LH levels, revealing that testicular responsiveness to gonadotropins likely declined during the ibuprofen exposure", the authors write.

The study's findings come at a time when male infertility has become a big issue.
