Theresa May says 'I'm no quitter' as she prepares Cabinet reshuffle

Theresa May says 'I'm no quitter' as she prepares Cabinet reshuffle”

UK Prime Minister Theresa May attempted to inject new energy into a government weighed down by Brexit on Monday, reorganizing her top ministerial team with an eye to strengthening the apparatus of her governing Conservative Party.

Brandon Lewis has been named the new party chairman, amid farcical scenes which saw the Tories' official Twitter account incorrectly announce that the job had gone to Chris Grayling.

The reshuffle was meant to "refresh" May's team after a torrid 2017, when she called a snap election only to lose her parliamentary majority, and in which three of her senior ministers were forced to resign in scandals.

An interim deal on Brexit in December 2017 appeared to give her new impetus, and the much-anticipated reshuffle was arranged.

Most senior ministers stayed in their posts on Monday, with some defying May's attempts to move them. Damian Green was the third minister to leave the cabinet in the space of a few weeks, after the defence secretary and worldwide development minister both quit - all three following separate scandals.

Sir Patrick McLoughlin, the outgoing Conservative party chairman, has confirmed that he has left the cabinet.

His replacement was announced on Twitter, only for the tweet to be nearly immediately deleted.

"So we take these words by the prime minister very seriously, and it is therefore only natural that in this house we also prepare for every eventuality".

As it stands, Britain is set to exit the European Union on the 29 March 2019.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who favours the United Kingdom remaining in the single market and customs union, said Mr Davis's words were "extraordinary" given the government had set aside £3.7bn to prepare the United Kingdom for the possibility of leaving without an agreement.

Key figures in Cabinet - the foreign Ministry, interior Ministry, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Brexit - will remain in place.

Ms. May moved to make changes to her team of top Ministers after ending previous year with a deal to shift talks with the European Union (EU) to a second phase.

However, many of May's ministers disagree on the shape of the future relationship.

The health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, whom May had planned to move to the business department to replace Greg Clark, instead talked the prime minister out of it. He has failed to bring together feuding political parties in the British province, where the devolved government collapsed a year ago nearly to the day.

May is also predicted to promote more women and MPs from ethnic minorities as she tries to counter an alleged culture of sexual harassment in Westminster and criticism her party is too narrowly representative of multicultural Britain. 2015 intake MP James Cleverly has joined him as deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party.

She was offered the welfare ministry "but declined to take it", a Downing Street source said.
