World Health Organization pledges to support Kenya's universal healthcare goals”

President Uhuru Kenyatta (left) with World Health Organization director general Tedros Ghebreyesus at State House, Nairobi, yesterday.

Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Cleopa Mailu met the World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, for bilateral discussions on government initiatives towards attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

"The goal of my visit is to discuss progress Kenya has made in health sector and how we can strengthen our cooperation", he said.

During the meeting, he emphasised that the organisation will support the government's universal health care endeavor.

"Madagascar can make plague epidemics a thing of the past through strategic investments in its health system - including better access to healthcare, improving preparedness, surveillance and response capabilities, and implementing the International Health Regulations", Ghebreyesus said.

When Uhuru was sworn into office past year, he said his administration will focus on food security, affordable housing, manufacturing and affordable healthcare as key pillars during his second term in office.

During his two day visit to Kenya, Ghebreyesus will also meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and reaffirm the commitment by multilateral agencies to help the country achieve health-related sustainable development goals.

He said the other three pillars also contribute to the wellbeing and health of Kenyans hence WHO will discuss not only on UHC directly but also other determinants and how to partner and support Kenya.

Uhuru welcomed WHO's support in delivering his Big Four plan, especially on boosting healthcare delivery for all Kenyans.

"We have a relatively young population in Kenya and I see no reason why we can not achieve our health target". Those funds went to the delivery of medicines and supplies, bolstering governmental efforts, sharing guidelines on case management and safe burials, surveillance and lab testing, training of local identifiers and strengthening public health efforts at ports and airports. "We are looking at ensuring that it is affordable and efficient, otherwise it will collapse." he said.
