4th immigrant teen in custody says US preventing abortion”

Updated | The Trump administration is trying to block a fourth undocumented immigrant woman from receiving an abortion-even though she plans to pay for it herself. The court documents do tell us that Jane Moe is in her second trimester, a point at which the majority of Americans believe abortion should be illegal.

The 17-year-old came to the country illegally and was staying at a taxpayer-funded shelter in Texas when she requested an abortion.

The civil rights organization sued the Trump administration in October, claiming it was using "unconstitutional veto power" over abortion, and won its case before Chutkan for "Jane Doe", who ultimately had an abortion at 11 weeks before the Trump administration could appeal the case to the Supreme Court, causing the ACLU's actions to be considered questionable.

Under the Trump administration's policy, ORR also required Ms. Moe to visit a so-called crisis pregnancy center, an organization whose sole objective is to discourage pregnant woman from having abortions. In the time since, government officials have barred her from leaving to undergo the abortion.

Americans United for Life is deeply disappointed that, yet again, the ACLU is attempting to force the United States Government to expend its resources in terminating an unborn child, the exact age of whom has been withheld.

The past three teenagers represented by the ACLU were eventually able to obtain abortions against the government's wishes.

"No one should be shamed for making the right decision for themselves", Jane Doe said in a statement released by the group in October. Then there were Jane Roe and Poe. "Instead, they made me see a doctor that tried to convince me not to abort and to look at sonograms. Through all of this, I have never changed my mind".

A spokesman with the Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families - which runs ORR - said in a statement that the administration does not believe it is its responsibility to facilitate abortions, but that Jane Moe has options if she chooses them.

The office's director, E. Scott Lloyd, denied the teen's request over the recommendation of a senior staff member who said the office should assist the teen in getting an abortion, according to the filing.

The Trump administration is blatantly ignoring the fact that the Supreme Court has held for the past 45 years that abortion is a fundamental constitutional right. Later, Trump administration said the ACLU lied to its lawyers about when the teen's abortion would take place, preventing it from appealing, the AP reports.

The American Civil Liberties Union said on Thursday it would take on the case of Jane Moe, who's now in government custody in an undisclosed location. Her case arises under a broader effort, Garza v. Hargan, which challenges the White House's efforts to bar undocumented immigrants from seeking abortions.

In the meantime, advocates worry that other young people are at risk - many of whom lack legal representation and remain in limbo. "We know there are more Jane Does out there".
