ANC debunks Jacob Zuma's demands for stepping down reports”

President Zuma and his supporters have also reportedly demanded that some of his key cabinet appointments, such as energy minister David Mahlobo and state security minister Bongani Bongo be retained in Ramaphosa's new cabinet.

But sources told the Mail & Guardian that the negotiations had deadlocked this week with ANC officials refusing to guarantee Zuma's conditions.

Magashule said the NEC had also resolved that he and Paul Mashatile‚ the newly elected ANC treasurer general‚ will step down from their government positions - respectively‚ Free State premier and Gauteng MEC of co-operative governance and traditional affairs - by the end of March‚ when the financial year comes to an end.

The report said Zuma is adamant that after he steps down, Dlamini-Zuma, ex-wife of Zuma and now an ANC MP, takes over as the country's interim president until the 2019 general elections.

"At the moment, it's a stalemate (on the conditions under which Zuma would agree to resign)".

But on Tuesday night, on the eve of the meeting, Zuma announced that he would establish a commission of inquiry into state capture.

Another NEC meeting is expected in the next few weeks.

Talks of a Jacob Zuma exit from the ANC, and subsequently the presidency, have gripped the country in fervour of happy thoughts and positive reinforcement.

Newly elected ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule confirmed on Wednesday that Ramaphosa had been meeting and engaging Zuma. It's understood Zuma's fate could be put on the agenda. His ties to Russian Federation have also been questionable.

This is one of the key conditions that Zuma has put down during behind-the-scenes negotiations now taking place with newly elected ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, in exchange for his resignation, according to a Mail & Guardian report.

The group's visit, which was received by the grandson of the late first black president of South Africa Nkosi Mandla Mandela is part of the tributes to the founders of the veteran organization on the occasion of its 106th anniversary on January 8.
