Bears bring back defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on 3-year deal

Bears bring back defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on 3-year deal”

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bears will hire former University of OR head coach as their new offensive coordinator.

Fangio has developed this Bears' defense over the past three seasons, under head John Fox.

Fangio runs a 3-4 defense like the Cardinal have had for several seasons.

Vic Fangio, previously one of the Green Bay Packers' top targets to replace defensive coordinator Dom Capers, is heading back to Chicago. Subscribe on Apple podcasts or Stitcher Radio.

Fangio returned from the West Coast early Wednesday and was in discussions with the team that day.

Helfrich's main accomplishments all occurred at the collegiate level, where he was the offensive coordinator for OR under former head coach Chip Kelly.

The Chicago Bears hired the former OR head coach as offensive coordinator. By no means did that close off all options for Fangio. New Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy, left, is interviewed by a local television station while others wait after an NFL football news conference Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, in Lake Forest, Ill.

But the Bears presented a chance for Fangio to continue building what he has worked on the last three years.

Helfrich is Nagy's fourth reported coaching hire and the first without ties to Lovie Smith's Bears staff.

The Bears finished the season 10th with 319.1 yards allowed per game and ninth with 20 points allowed per game. It accomplished that while losing six starters or key contributors to injured reserve: outside linebackers Leonard Floyd, Willie Young and Pernell McPhee, inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman, safety Quintin Demps and defensive end Mitch Unrein.

With Nagy calling the plays on offense, Fangio's defensive knowledge becomes that much more important. But he's the second arrival from the college ranks, joining former Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, whose securing by Nagy on Thursday was met with rave reviews.
