Coli Outbreak Has Killed 2. This Could Be the Source”

Consumer Reports is urging people in the United States and Canada to avoid eating romaine lettuce after an outbreak of E. Coli infections.

Seventeen incidents have been reported in California, Illinois, Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington from November 15 through December 8, 2017.

Consumer Reports is warning Americans to stay away from romaine lettuce after dozens of cases of E. coli in the U.S. and Canada left two people dead.

"Because we have not identified a source of the infections, CDC is unable to recommend whether USA residents should avoid a particular food", the CDC stated in a public release.

That complication is usually hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is a type of kidney failure. State and local public health officials are interviewing sick people in the US. "If so, and people aren't warned, more may get sick". Canada subsequently advised people in that part of the country to consider other leafy greens. While anyone can get sick from the bacteria, the young, elderly and anyone who has a weakened immune system are at greater risk. In Canada, there have been 41 cases reported, contained to the eastern provinces of Ontario (8), Quebec (14), New Brunswick (5), Nova Scotia (1), and Newfoundland and Labrador (13). Consumer Reports has already issued a warning. "This investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available". Those symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, headache, mild fever, severe stomach cramps and watery or bloody diarrhea. "Unfortunately, we have not been able to find common lettuce brands or common stores". "They can say it's romaine lettuce, but they cannot say what lettuce and from where", he said.

Rogers explains that vegetables can be contaminated if animal feces are in the field or in irrigation or washing water.

The CDC said that because the strains of E. coli across sufferers were genetically similar it was "likely" they shared the same source of infection.
