Florida House passes plan to bar 'sanctuary cities'

Florida House passes plan to bar 'sanctuary cities'”

"It also exposes localities to litigation costs for Fourth Amendment violations and racial profiling by requiring officials to fully comply with all immigration detainer requests, regardless of whether there has been a judicial determination of probable cause -a practice that has been ruled unconstitutional by several courts across the country and a cost taxpayers should not have to undertake".

The debate took on another element Friday, after widespread reports that Trump questioned why the United States should accept immigrants from "s--hole countries" like Haiti, El Salvador and countries in Africa. Republicans in the House hope the absence of recently-resigned Sen.

Representative Ross Spano said, "Rejecting the rule of law, members, has profound consequences".

The sponsor of Florida's bill anticipates legal challenges if it becomes law.

During Friday's debate on the sanctuary bill, Corcoran and his leadership team released the following comment regarding Trump's reported comments.

"Representative Sean Shaw said, "[The president made] remarks that should offend everyone in this room". House Speaker Corcoran and other lawmakers have said HB 9 was inspired by the 2015 fatal shooting of Kate Steinle in San Francisco.

In an early morning tweet Friday, Trump denied making the remarks but did not specify what he said at the meeting centered on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, the Obama-era policy that focused on children who are brought into the US illegally by their parents or guardians.

The Florida House has overwhelmingly approved a ban against sanctuary policies. Sponsored by Rep. Larry Metz, HB 9 requires local and state agencies to comply with federal immigration authorities and prohibits sanctuary policies. "This bill is about following federal immigration law, not the whims of a President".

Republicans defended the bill as simply upholding the rule of law but also condemned Trump's comments. "The sanctuary policy. I said I never want to see this happen in the state of Florida", Metz said during his closing comments on the bill.

Many of those bills have been proposed previously only to die in the more moderate Senate, and they could fail to pass again in that chamber this year. "This is about lawful immigration and the rule of law".
