Golden Globes draws attention to sexual harassment and inequality

Golden Globes draws attention to sexual harassment and inequality”

Both film and television stars flocked to Hollywood for the Golden Globes Sunday, but it was Time's Up and the "me too" movement that took most of the spotlight. "Oprah in the past has said, 'I don't have any experience in politics.' Well, neither does the guy who is now the president".

And there was certainly ample chatter about it on social media that may have reached a crescendo with Oprah Winfrey's speech about civil and human rights after she was awarded the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement (photo above). We break down what's behind the polar temperatures that gripped the east coast over the weekend and the upcoming warm-up.

"It's up to the people", Graham told the Los Angeles Times.

Oprah's rallying speech prompted calls for her to stand for the presidency in 2020 which could possibly pitch her against Trump, if he was to seek a second term.

Winfrey said. "And it's here with every woman who chooses to say, "Me too" and every man, every man who chooses to listen".

I really don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched it yet, but her speech was ... let's just say it will go down as one of the best speeches in history. She told The Hollywood Reporter in June, "I will never run for public office". But the most inspirational words were for women.

In a tweeted statement, NBC blamed the Oprah-boosting post on a "third party agency", noting that the caption was "in reference to a joke made during the opening monologue and not meant to be a political statement..." It's on us to seek out, mentor, make space for, hire, celebrate those girls she mentioned.

But the co-hosts aren't convinced Oprah wants to run for President, as the announcing her decision to run would "polarise the country", according columnist Meghan McCain. But it's no longer all that far-fetched to think that someone known primarily for their work on TV and with absolutely no governing experience could not only run for president but also win. Argento tweeted that nobody should forget that McGowan was the first one to break the silence on Weinstein, and McGowan replied: "And not one of those fancy people wearing black to honor our rapes would have lifted a finger had it not been so".

"It came from such a pure instinctive place", she said on the podcast.

Some Democrats - still reeling from Hillary Clinton's shock loss to Trump in 2016 - have embraced the idea of having their own celebrity candidate.

"If that inspired you then you should also check out what your dad said on a bus in 2005", added Tony Posnanski. "We now know that this partisan fight has becomes a fierce battle for the soul of America", Steyer said. The same can't be said for the men of the evening, who generally avoided the conversation as if Hollywood wasn't in the midst of a hugely-publicized reckoning with powerful, abusive men.
