Iran protest: death toll rises to 21 By”

He said that "we appeal to the Iranian government to respect the rights of demonstrators to assemble and raise their voice freely and peacefully". These Iranian protests may be a lot less organized and focused, but no ideological red flags are evident right now.

But Iranians are not happy with the recent rising costs of food and fuel, as well as the alleged corruption and economic mismanagement within the government.

In the capital city of Tehran crowds vandalized one of the main shopping avenues, and in city after city crowds have come out to protest, jeer, and in some cases throw stones at the police. The demonstrations began over economic grievances but have since taken on a political dimension, with unprecedented calls for the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to step down. But he said the United States is also prepared to act in support of the protesters.

The Iranian Security Forces: In 2009, protests against the allegedly rigged results of the presidential election were crushed by Iran's security forces.

"He recently called Iranians a "terrorist nation" and provoked their anger by using a fabricated name for the Persian Gulf".

Iran cut access to social media on Sunday in a bid to head off further protests after days of unrest that saw two people killed and dozens arrested.

According to Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Iran's Interior Minister, the unemployment rate in some parts of the country is over 60%.

The protests in Kermanshah on Friday took place a day after hundreds rallied in Mashhad, a city in the country's north-east.

A US State Department spokeswoman said those killed and detained "will not be forgotten", after the White House warned it could impose sanctions on any officials it holds responsible.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, a senior parliamentary adviser, responding to Donald Trump's message of support for the protests on Twitter, said the United States president should not get excited because "sedition, unrest and chaos are different from gatherings and peaceful protests to pursue people's livelihoods", the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

"The economy is in such a dire state that President Rouhani's minor achievements don't make much of a difference", says Reza Ansari Rad, a journalist based in Tehran.

Since the protests broke out, Trump has endorsed them, culminating on Wednesday with the suggestion that the USA could offer "great support" to protesters.

Mr Trump's comments follow an announcement by U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who said the USA would "amplify the voices of the Iranian people" and said the protests were the "completely spontaneous" act of a "long-oppressed people rising up against their dictators". "Both the regime and demonstrators should be made constantly aware that the world's attention is fixed on them".

The protests began over Iran's economy, which has improved since the nuclear deal that saw Iran agree to limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the end of some global sanctions.

Under the deal, Trump must actively lift certain sanctions every few months and the next deadline falls on January 12.

On Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stated that the country's "enemies" were "angry with the glory, success and progress of the Iranian nation and they have vowed to get the regional troubles into Iran".

When did the protests begin? .

Most powerful is the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, the protests now transcend conservative issues.

Despite restrictions placed on social media, demonstrators are still taking to the streets and tensions remain high.

The young are the most affected, with as many as 40 percent jobless according to analysts, and rural areas particularly hard-hit. "As Mahsa Alimardani from Politico, the protesters" reliance on Telegram leaves them vulnerable to government monitoring. The people want an Iranian Republic, not an Islamic Republic.
