Olivier, Ngidi added to South Africa squad for second Test

Olivier, Ngidi added to South Africa squad for second Test”

It is another bitter blow for the fast bowler who returned from 14 months on the sidelines in the 72-run first test victory in Cape Town that saw him break down again.

Steyn pulled up three balls into his 18th over after taking two for 51 in the first Test against India at Newlands.

Significantly, South Africa has strengthened its hold on India in the first Test match. He had made his Test debut against Sri Lanka a year ago in Johannesburg where he took five wickets in the match but has not been able to establish himself as a regular member of the side against strong competition. There are fears the 34-year-old speedster's career might be up just as he approaches Pollock's record. After that Steyn went for scans where the extent of his injury was revealed.

The South African spearhead has been ruled out from bowling in the ongoing Test and the series with a "badly bruised foot and heel".

"During Dale's 18th over, he landed awkwardly in the footholds, causing significant strain in the foot, leading to tissue damage on the underside of the foot in the heel area", South Africa team manager Dr Mohammad Moosajee, who is also a medical doctor, said according to Cricbuzz. Before that, the paceman, regarded as one of the game's great fast bowlers, endured other problems with his right shoulder and a groin injury.

His comeback was closely watched with fears that he hadn't played enough cricket in the buildup to this season and might struggle for match fitness.
