Screen 'Padmavat' in court before release: Rajasthan High Court

Screen 'Padmavat' in court before release: Rajasthan High Court”

Hearing a petition filed by Bhansali, seeking the quashing of an FIR lodged against him at Didwana in Merta in March a year ago, the court posted the matter to January 23.

The reason for the ban in these BJP-ruled states is yet to be known.

In March previous year, Virendra Singh, a resident of Nagaur district, had filed a case at Deedwana police station seeking action against Bhansali and film's lead actors for hurting religious sentiments. The single bench of Justice Sandeep Mehta stated that the FIR raised serious allegations against the petitioners and it could not be quashed without judging the merit of the complaint. On behalf of the petitioners, senior counsel Mahesh Bora had argued that the movie, then titled Padmavati, was still being made and even a trailer had not been released. The director's consent is necessary for the screening of the film. "After getting the reply from the film's director, we will file a reply in the court", said Bora.

The court has asked the producers to hold a film screening in the court before January 23.

Public prosecutor JP Bhardwaj said, "The high court has already stayed the arrest of the accused".

On this, the court said that since allegations of wrong scenes and tampering with history in this movie have been made in the FIR, the court can not cancel this FIR without watching the film.

Besides Rajasthan, the governments of Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat have also said no to the screening of the film in their respective territories.

The Shri Rajput Karni Sena also demanded changes in the names of the characters days after the CBFC suggested changing the film's title to Padmavat, after Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic poem of the same name on which it is based. But protests by various Rajput organisations and rejection by the CBFC delayed it further.

The movie is slated to hit cinema halls on January 25. "We will not let her dignity be tarnished at any cost".
