Trump Says His Words Were Tough But He Didn't Say 'Shithole' Nations

Trump Says His Words Were Tough But He Didn't Say 'Shithole' Nations”

Trump had questioned why the United States would want to accept immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as "shithole countries".

"Why are we having all of these people from s-hole countries com here", Trump is accused of saying during the meeting.

"I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Donald Trump is a racist", Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona tweeted.

One person briefed on the meeting said when Durbin brought up the subject of Haiti, Trump questioned it in vulgar terms and added that the US should get more people from countries like Norway.

"It was a heartbreaking moment", Durbin said. "We don't have a wall, we are not doing the deal", he said yesterday, adding that he has a good chance to make a deal. "That's what breaks my heart".

White House spokesman Raj Shah did not deny Trump's statements. Obama has frequently spoken about the importance of respecting the "peaceful transition of power", which helps explain the shift in his direct attacks on Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign versus his more veiled critiques post-Election Day. "The President Of This Country Is A Sick Man!" he wrote on Twitter Thursday night.

Trump denied using the vulgar language in a Friday morning tweet.

Trump also described the meeting as a "big setback for DACA!".

Durbin said the president's denial is a lie.

"You've seen the comments in the press", Durbin said.

"There is no other word one can use but racist".

And in a tweet that harks back to Trump's false claim to have audio recordings of private conversations with former FBI Director James B. Comey, the president said he "probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust!" It is not true.

Developing countries do have difficulties, but they are not "shithole countries", Duarte said, while calling Trump's remarks as "unfortunate".

"If the Republican leadership has a better alternative, bring it forward", Durbin said.

"For him [Graham] to confront the president as he did, literally sitting next to him, took extraordinary political courage, and I respect him for it", he said.

Sources told The Washington Post on Thursday that while discussing temporary legal protection for Haitians, Trump asked "Why do we need more Haitians?" and told those attending to "take them out".
