United Nations hails talks between North, South Korea”

Former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton said President Trump plans to keep up pressure on North Korea by deploying supercarrier USS Carl Vinson to the Korean peninsula. "If I weren't involved, they wouldn't be talking about Olympics right now", he said.

Only two athletes from the North, figure skaters Ryom Tae-ok and Kim Ju-sik, have so far qualified for the Games, but they were not registered before the October 30 deadline.

Both of the summits, one in 2000 and the other in 2007, took place when South Korea was under liberal presidents who sought rapprochement with North Korea despite conservative criticism that they provided the North with little-strings-attached aid shipments.

After the talks, the two Koreas made a decision to hold military talks on easing border tensions.

At Saturday's Camp David news conference, Trump also spoke of his willingness to hold phone talks with Kim.

As a candidate, Mr Trump is said to have asked why the U.S. could not use its nuclear weapons.

"How can we de-escalate these issues and prevent a possible armed conflict, and while doing so bring North Korea to a dialogue?"

Moon's New Year's address was both populist and pacifist; the president emphasized improving the quality of life for the average citizen and reaffirmed his dedication to peace on the peninsula and the dismantling of the North's nuclear program.

"I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un", Trump said in an interview about the first year of his presidency with The Wall Street Journal newspaper.

When North Korean teams have played in the South without accompanying supporters, pro-unification South Koreans have turned out to support them, such as at a women's ice hockey match previous year in Gangneung, an Olympic venue. Giving them sanctions relief just because they are sending a delegation to the Olympics is wrong; North Korea should be required to discuss the reason for the sanctions: its nuclear and missile programs.

Attacks by Trump on Kim could also play into the North Korean dictator's hands, since many experts see his current gambit as an effort to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington.

The invite to North Korea to participate in the Olympics has already required some diplomatic and internal Olympic Committee (IOC) gymnastics to make the idea reality. He vowed to respond to North Korea with "fire and fury like the world has never seen", underscored by a frightening vision of "preventive war". Japan, South Korea, India and Sweden are among those invited.

"If something can happen and something comes out of those talks, that would be a great thing for all of humanity, that would be a great thing for the world".

The press release did not include additional information on what conditions would need to be satisfied in order to begin the talks, but the Trump Administration has previously said that it will only talk to Pyongyang if it puts its nuclear weapons on the negotiating table.

Separately Wednesday, two of North Korea's closest neighbors criticized Canada's effort to help coordinate the global response to Kim's weapons program.
