Liberia ruling party expels president for not supporting VP

Liberia's outgoing governing party says it has voted to expel President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf because of her alleged decision not to support her vice president in the latest presidential poll.

Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has been in power for 12 years, denies the party's allegations that she held inappropriate private meetings with election magistrates before the October 10.

Two other strong members of the party known to be very loyal to the Liberian leader were also expelled from the party.

The Unity Party accuses Johnson Sirleaf of sending people to campaign against the party, Mohammed Ali, assistant secretary-general for press and public affairs, is quoted as saying by AP. This information is, however, not independently confirmed by this paper.

Throughout the 2017 election process, several calls were made by partisans to expel the Standard Bearer Emeritus, Mr. and Mrs. Wesseh for campaigning against the party's Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates in gross violation of the party's constitution, the release stated.

The party's spokesman said Boakai, who has served as vice president of the country for 12 years, supported Sirleaf's expulsion from the party.
