Catherine Deneuve apologises to sexual assault victims”

Catherine Deneuve apologized to victims of sexual assault after a letter disavowing #MeToo.

. In a second letter this time published on the Liberation website Denueve says she "warmly greets all victims of these ugly acts who may have been offended. but there was nothing in the original letter which said anything good about harassment otherwise she would not have signed it". "It is to them, and them alone, that I apologise".

While expressing her opinion that nothing in the open letter published in Le Monde last week suggested in any way that harassment is okay, she also stated that she disagrees with what she regards as lynch mob mentality.

They branded it a "witch-hunt" that they claim threatens sexual freedom.

"I am a free woman and I will remain so". "I don't like this characteristic of our era where everyone feels they have the right... to condemn".

She also protested not being considered a feminist.

To those critics who said she is not a feminist, she reminded them that she had signed a landmark 1971 manifesto defending abortion rights, written by Simone de Beauvoir and signed by another 342 women, who, like her, had had abortions.

As an actress since she was 17, Deneuve admitted that during her career she had been "a witness to indelicate situations" between men and women.

She referred to former radio presenter Brigitte Lahaie, who during a heated debate on BFMTV said women were able to "orgasm during a rape".

Without naming names, she seemingly referenced two cases - All the Money in the World removing Kevin Spacey from the film and the resignation of New York Ballet head Peter Martins - saying that both faced repercussions "without any other form of trial".

"Their letter is like a exhausted old uncle who doesn't understand what is happening", the feminists said. "It's unworthy. And obviously nothing in the text claims that harassment is good, otherwise I wouldn't have signed it", she wrote.

"Yes, I signed that petition, however, it seems absolutely necessary today to underline my disagreement with the way certain signatories have individually assumed the right to expand upon it in the media, distorting the spirit of the text", she wrote.

The solution to sexual harassment "will come with the upbringing of our boys and girls", she said, adding that businesses must also set guidelines so that "if there is harassment, legal action will be immediately taken".

"I am not fooled", she wrote.
