Wasps 26 Ulster Rugby 7

Wasps 26 Ulster Rugby 7”

George Ford booted five penalties for Leicester tigers but a late kick from Maxime Machenaud saw them edged out by Racing 92 at Welford Road.

Wasps took the lead after 11 minutes, they kicked a penalty to touch and set up a driving maul but Ulster stopped it illegally, the home side went to the corner again, lock James Gaskell took the lineout and the forwards powered over with flanker Guy Thompson touching down at the back of the maul with Danny Cipriani adding the conversion. Despite winning four of their six group matches, they only collected one bonus point which proved debilitating. However, Sarries hammered Northampton 62-14 on Saturday and that was enough to see them squeak into the knock-out stages.

Les Kiss side started the day knowing any kind of win would guarantee a place in the last eight but Ulster were outplayed in every facet of the game as the set piece malfunctioned and Wasps bossed the battle of the breakdown.

Ulster looked set to make it a ideal pool stage for the Irish but ran into an inspired Wasps, who claimed a bonus point thanks to tries from Guy Thompson, Tom Cruise, South African full-back Willie Le Roux and Jake Cooper-Woolley, Danny Cipriani going three from four with the conversions. La Rochelle's win, combined with Wasps's triumph over Munster, ensured they won Pool One.

Ulster's reply from Sean Reidy was scant consolation for the team from Ravenhill.

They now prepare for a titanic clash when they host three-time winners Toulon.

Finalists two years ago, Racing earned their berth by hanging on to beat Leicester 23-20 in the snowy English midlands.

Henry Chavancy and Machenaud both crossed the whitewash for the French visitors inside the opening 12 minutes while England star Ford bisected the posts three times in the opening 40 minutes to make it 14-9 at the break.

In the quarter-finals, Racing will face fellow French side Clermont Auvergne, who topped Pool 2 after beating Ospreys 24-7.
