After false missile alarm, Ige couldn't log on to Twitter”

On January 13, an emergency alert of an incoming ballistic missile and calls to seek shelter caused panic among Hawaii residents.

Gov. David Ige has faced heat for his administration's handling of the false alert, including the length of time - 38 minutes - that it took for a correction to be sent.

Reporters asked Ige why it took 15 minutes for the governor to alert citizens about the false alarm.

It took nearly 40 minutes for an updated alert to be sent to phones, by which time many people had heard news of the false alarm through news reports or social media updates. According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser, that's in part because he was coordinating with emergency officials and in part because he forgot his Twitter password.

Ige told reporters Monday he's since put his username and password into his cellphone.

Unlike regular Twitter user President Donald Trump, Hawaii Gov. David Ige couldn't tweet a message about the recent nuclear false alarm without the help of his staff.

Ige spokeswoman Cindy McMillan said Friday the governor had to track her down to prepare a message for the public before they could post anything.

"I have to confess that I don't know my Twitter account log-ons and the passwords, so certainly that's one of the changes that I've made", he said, per the Daily News. "I will be putting that on my phone".

The executive officer of Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency is planning to retire by year's end.

The Hawaii governor apologized shortly after the incident, noting that "steps have already been taken by the Hawai'i Emergency Management Agency to ensure that a situation of this type never happens again".
