Despite Leading 2013 Shutdown, Cruz Says I've 'Consistently Opposed' Them

Despite Leading 2013 Shutdown, Cruz Says I've 'Consistently Opposed' Them”

"I have consistently opposed shutdowns", he insisted Monday in a testy exchange with journalists, hours before Congress voted to end a far less damaging three-day shutdown.

Cruz, who was aligned with House tea party members, did try to bring up bills that would fund individual federal agencies, but he did so without Republican Senate support. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for misrepresenting his role in the last government shutdown. "Didn't you say all of this when this happened to you?" she asked pointedly. "In 2013 virtually every single Republican voted to fund the government, including me multiple times, and virtually every - in fact, every single Democrat, I believe, in 2013, voted to shut the government down". "I went to the floor asking unanimous consent to reopen the government".

Cruz blamed Democrats for the previous shutdown - but Hunt again called him out by reminding him of his scheme to undo Obamacare before it could fully take effect.

Hunt: Sir, that's simply not the case.

"That's factually incorrect", claimed Cruz.

"Why were all of your GOP colleagues angry with you if you didn't?" she said. He blamed it on Republicans being divided back then before boasting that he wrote a book about it. "I just wish the 35 House members that have bought the snake oil that was sold could witness what was witnessed today at lunch.". "This time Republicans actually stayed united".

Yet he has always denied responsibility for the shutdown, even in the run-up, at its height, and in the days afterward, as other Republicans openly fumed at him for pushing the tactic.

When he was challenged by reporters who said he "stood in the way" and caused the governmental shutdown over his crusade to defund the Affordable Care Act, he said the media "love" to blame shutdowns on Republicans. The senator has basically argued before that he never wanted a shutdown, he was just trying to defund Obamacare, and it was everyone else's fault for not going along. "Mitch McConnell was not happy with him, and the government shut down because clearly Senate Democrats were not going to go along with a budget agreement that defunded Obamacare". Obviously, President Obama and Senate Democrats-who still controlled the higher chamber-rejected the idea that their signature legislative achievement of the decade should be de facto repealed through parliamentary trickery and hostage-taking. They were making certain demands about what is included in a measure, refused to provide the votes for a shutdown.

Cruz: I get that you want to debate me, but you don't have any facts.
