In a statement Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) blamed lower demand as a result of uncertainty surrounding Brexit and concerns around the future of petrol and diesel for the temporary cuts, which will not affect staff numbers.

Late on Monday, JLR, part of Tata Motors, said that following a regular review of production schedules, "temporary adjustments" would be made to production at Halewood, where the Range Rover Evoque and the Land Rover Discovery Sport are assembled, in a move that had already been communicated to the workforce.

Across its three factories in the UK, JLR produces roughly one in three of the country's 1.7 million cars that are built here each year, but sales at home and in Europe last year weren't exactly great.

Ongoing uncertainty surrounding Brexit is being felt by customers at home...and in Europe where collectively we sell approximately 45% of total United Kingdom production.

Added to this, the concern over the future of petrol and diesel engines and general economic and political uncertainty has impacted auto sales.

The volumes of both models have remained at peak levels since then and the vehicle manufacturer indicated that a change to the current three-shift production line is not likely to lead to job losses at the factory.

However, booming profits have prompted some to see it as well-placed for a possible public flotation (IPO).

In the recent times, PSA Group, the new owner of Vauxhall, had cut 250 jobs at the Ellesmere Port facility where Astra is produced.

The company blamed falling sales in the United Kingdom - caused by a lack of consumer confidence over Brexit and worries over diesel cars.

"Economic and Brexit uncertainty are contributing factors along with the Government's confused policy on diesel engines".
