Trump and May patch up 'special relationship' in Davos

Trump and May patch up 'special relationship' in Davos”

We have very much joined at the hip when it comes to military.

Shaking hands with the president after their bilateral meeting at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort, May said they had enjoyed a "great discussion" about the prospects for improved trade relations.

"We're in a new age of doing business".

Since then Trump has cancelled a proposed visit to the United Kingdom to open the new USA embassy in London amid reports he complained to the prime minister about negative coverage in the British press.

A year ago, the Davos spotlight was claimed by China's communist leader Xi Jinping, who took up the torch of global trade to the delight of the well-heeled audience then anxious about Trump's inauguration.

Jared Kushner, Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, and US Rep. Mark Meadows (R-North Carolina) also attended the meeting but did not speak.

Trump, never invited as a businessman, will be the first USA president to attend Davos since Bill Clinton in 2000, giving him a chance to mingle with the same elite "globalists" he bashed in the 2016 election campaign.

However the government will nonetheless continue to consider the option of giving President Trump a formal state visit, in which he will stay with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, in the future.

"I thought in terms of lots of people that want to invest lots of money", Trump said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday.

"There is nothing that would happen to you that we won't be there to fight for you".

"Every country must support and shape the rules for free and fair trade and investment".

Before the pair's talks, May said Britain's relationship with the United States is as strong as it ever has been.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he had "strongly recommended" that Trump attend the forum during a recent phone conversation, saying he thought it was a good thing for Trump to explain his strategic goals and hear different viewpoints.

"From the UK's perspective the big sort of prize and the big sort of goal, in policy terms, is trying to strike a trade deal with the USA", the Wall Street Journal's Jason Douglas told Cheddar.

Mr Trump said he skipped the trip because he was unhappy with the new embassy's cost and location.

The president also dismissed "false rumours" that there had been a rift between the two countries. And Canada's Justin Trudeau revealed that his country and the 10 remaining members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership have revised their trade deal following the USA withdrawal.

Brexit has heightened the importance of the UK-US "special relationship", with the prospect of a transatlantic trade deal a major goal for Ms May.
