After a "major" launch anomaly, satellites scrambling to reach orbits

After a

With Ariane-5 going silent, the fear had been that SES-14 and the other satellites were lost altogether.

Two satellites placed into incorrect orbits by an Ariane 5 that suffered an anomaly during its January 25 launch can be recovered and placed into their desired orbits, their operators said January 26.

"Following the anomaly that occurred during the launch on an Ariane 5 rocket last night, SES announces that it has successfully established a telemetry and telecommand connection to its SES-14 spacecraft and is setting up a new orbit raising plan now", the satellite organization said.

A European rocket carrying two commercial payloads and a NASA mission led by the University of Central Florida experienced an anomaly after launching, Arianespace chief executive Stéphane Israël said Thursday. The satellite also carries NASA's Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk remote sensing instrument as a hosted payload. Its next launch will take place in mid-March, orbiting Superbird B3/DSN 1 for Sky Perfect JSAT and the Hylas 4 High Throughput Satellite (HTS) for Avanti.

"A few seconds after ignition of the upper stage, the second tracking station located in Natal, Brazil, did not acquire the launcher telemetry", the company said. This lack of telemetry lasted throughout the rest of powered flight. [The two satellites] are communicating with their respective control centres.

SES-14 and Al Yah 3 were separated from the launcher on a stable orbit. "Both missions are continuing". The inclinations are more problematic-this is the angle between the satellite's orbit and the equator.

Nonetheless, the operator said SES-14 would take just an additional four weeks to reach the allocated orbital slot at 47.5 degrees West, 36,000km above the coast of northern South America.

For every successful space launch that sends crew or much-needed supplies into space, there is an unsuccessful one such as what happened to SpaceX towards the end of a year ago.

Al Yah-3 was built by US satellite manufacturer Orbital ATK, and is based on the GEOStar-3 bus.

This mission was the first of 14 Arianespace has scheduled for this year.

As for what went wrong with the rocket itself, that's going to be the topic of a European Space Agency investigation.

Built by Orbital ATK using its new GEOStar-3 hybrid platform, the satellite will be operated by Yahsat to provide affordable broadband communications to 60 percent of Africa's population and more than 95 percent of Brazil's population.
