Sen. Collins: If Trump Fired Rosenstein, Would Be 'Terrible Mistake'”

"I'm not aware of the president ever intimating he wanted to fire" special counsel Robert Mueller, Short said on "Fox News Sunday".

The New York Times and other outlets reported that Trump backed off his attempt to fire Mueller last June only after White House lawyer Don McGahn refused to relay his directive to the Justice Department and threatened to quit if Trump pressed the issue.

According to the new report, that warning prompted Trump to take matters into his own hands, telling aides they needed to "fight back harder" and ordering them to orchestrate a smear campaign targeting the specific Federal Bureau of Investigation officials named by Comey, including Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

"The most important thing Congress can do right now is to ensure that Special Counsel Mueller's investigation continues uninterrupted and unimpeded", Schumer said.

CNN reported the president's frustration late Friday, noting that Trump "gripes about wanting Rosenstein removed" and "makes comments like "let's fire him, let's get rid of him" before his advisers convince him it's an ill-fated idea". "We all know what everyone in this room would do if the president were to do that and I don't think that's helpful to the process". "He feels like there's been millions of dollars of taxpayers' dollars spent and no evidence yet of collusion ..."

In testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, recently fired FBI Director James Comey disclosed that he spoke contemporaneously with other senior bureau officials about potentially improper efforts by the president to curtail the FBI's investigation of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation to interfere in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Still, Short said, "I know the president has been frustrated by this investigation". She says Trump needs to show more caution in commenting on the probe. Boyd's letter said the Justice Department is "currently unaware of any wrongdoing relating to the FISA process", but that the department takes any allegation of such abuse seriously and "we agree that any abuse of that system can not be tolerated".

Meanwhile, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), speaking on CNN's "State of The Union", said the president should avoid discussing the Russian Federation probe openly. In the newly released texts, Strzok and Page discuss the investigation of Hillary Clinton campaign emails and note that she could be the next president.

President Donald Trump would be making a "terrible mistake" if he fired Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - and should "never... ever" discuss special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe with anyone but his lawyer, Sen. "I take lying to the American people very, very seriously, so absolutely".

The person told Reuters on Friday that Trump asked McGahn to raise what he said were Mueller's conflicts with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein because the president thought they were serious enough to remove Mueller.

Former Defense Secretary Bob Gates, who served under the administrations of former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, said Mueller should be trusted to run an objective probe.
