Finsbury Park mosque attacker sentenced to life in prison

Finsbury Park mosque attacker sentenced to life in prison”

Woolwich Crown Court announced the punishment on Friday, a day after finding Darren Osborne guilty. "We walk past this this most days and are constantly reminded".

"This was a terrorist attack - you meant to kill", the Justice Cheema-Grubb said, handing him the sentence.

Osborne showed no emotion while being sentenced, but as he was led away told the court: "God bless you all, thank you".

Osborne attacked the crowd because they were wearing traditional Muslim dress, the prosecution had said during his trial.

The man behind a terror attack outside a mosque in London has been sentenced life in prison with a minimum term of 43 years after being found guilty of murder and attempted murder.

Most recently in 2014, aged 44, he was convicted of charges of theft, attempted theft and shoplifting in South Wales.

Mr Ali's two sons are 13 and 14 years old, the court heard.

She added: "While we accept that this is properly characterised as an act of terror".

Lisa Wilding QC, Osborne's barrister, had urged the judge not to use a whole-life term warranted by his motivations.

Prosecutors said they were "clear throughout that this was a terrorist attack".

Ms Wilding highlighted the fact that Osborne was a functioning alcoholic with a troubled past, saying the previous convictions had no racial element and he "became radicalised in a short period of time".

During the sentencing hearing, Ali's daughter, Ruzina Akhtar, said she could not describe the pain she and her relatives had suffered.

In a statement, she described how the family faced an agonising wait for Mr Ali's death to be confirmed.

She said: "My heart was shattered when I saw my father lying in the morgue".

"They will now grow up without the help and support of their father", she said.

Her mother now fears being targeted again because of her religion, the court heard.

"My mum is scared of going out by herself and being attacked because she is visibly a Muslim and wears a headscarf", she added.

Darren Osborne wanted to kill as many Muslims as possible, the jury heard.

"Before our father he left the house that night, he had spent the evening with his family, it was here where he felt most comfortable, he was such a peaceful man, no bad thoughts for anyone".

The head of the Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism command, Dean Haydon, said: "Osborne's evil and cowardly actions meant a family has tragically lost a husband, father and grandfather. He will never be forgotten".

"You told the jury you meant to plough through as many of them as possible, but you failed".

He added: "If Sadiq Khan had been there it would have been even better".
