New 'Men In Black' movie close to securing director

New 'Men In Black' movie close to securing director”

Director F. Gary Gray is now the frontrunner to direct Sony Pictures and Amblin's planned UNTITLED MEN IN BLACK SPIN-OFF, which will take place in the same world as the popular sci-comedy franchise starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Another option that had been discussed at Sony was teaming them with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum from the popular 21 Jump Street movies, but that seems to have been put on the backburner for now.

The untitled Men in Black spin-off was fast-tracked by Sony's Columbia subsidiary a year ago based on a script by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.

The film will follow new characters, rather than Agents K and J, played by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in the original films.

The Men in Black spin-off will introduce a new set of protagonists as they chase villains on more of a global scale compared to the original trilogy.

This Men In Black film has a script from Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, and from what we know, the script is pretty much good to go. The Fate of the Furious earned $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the second biggest film in the Fast and Furious franchise so far. The studio is hungry to get another franchise off the ground after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle turned into a surprise major hit, pulling in $823.9 million and counting. It will be a different project from the aborted "21 Jump Street" franchise mash-up, "MIB 23", which Jonah Hill admitted past year was "too complicated" in terms of the deals needed.

While no more specific details about the forthcoming movie have been announced, Sony's desire to snag Grey does say quite a bit about what we might expect.

A couple weeks back, we reminded you that Men In Black still actually had a spinoff film in the works. For my money, I'd like to see Tiffany Haddish in a Men in Black reboot paired with someone like Holly Hunter as the veteran agent.
