Rassie Erasmus in line for South Africa job after Allister Coetzee sacking

Rassie Erasmus in line for South Africa job after Allister Coetzee sacking”

This despite the uncertainty regarding the coaching personnel of the Springboks, with head coach Allister Coetzee and SA Rugby at loggerheads.

Sport360 believes newly appointed SA Rugby director of rugby Rassie Erasmus, who returned from Munster to South Africa in November previous year, will take over the role of Bok coach, although that may not be his official title at the start.

With South Africa trailing behind the likes of New Zealand and Australia more so than ever before and northern hemisphere rugby on the rise, whoever takes the reins, they most certainly have a job on their hands to meet the lofty expectations of the Springboks support.

Coetzee could only manage 11 wins in 25 matches for a 44% winning record.

The 54-year-old becomes the first Springbok coach to be dismissed while still under contract since Rudolf Straeuli following the 2003 World Cup.

Coetzee and SA Rugby agreed to terminate the relationship after a two-year association. "For that reason I think now is the time the team and me strike out in new directions", Coetzee was quoted as saying in press release. He was given new assistants.

The lowest point came in September, a 57-0 hammering by the All Blacks in New Zealand for South Africa's worst loss anywhere, ever. After that, Coetzee couldn't shrug off doubts over his suitability for the job. The last straw was the record 38-3 loss to Ireland in Dublin in November to start the Boks' end-of-year tour.

He then worked with a Japanese club before taking the South Africa job.

South Africa Rugby CEO Jurie Roux said on the governing body's website: "First and foremost we had to assess what is in the best interests of the Springboks". His role as SA Rugby director is to oversee all elements of the national team, and Coetzee reportedly said he was unwilling to work under Erasmus, calling it an "indignity".

Erasmus would not confirm whether he would be directly involved coaching the Springboks but assured fans that planning for the June series against England was well under way.

"We have to get to know the players and the coaches, understand what's going on, and to integrate ourselves into their systems".

The Boks - who have slumped to No 6 in the world rankings - next take on No 2 England in a three-Test series at home in June.

"It's sad to see this happening, but Allister must probably ask himself whether he possessed the skills set to coach the national team at this level and whether he should have accepted the position", he said.
