Kenyan opposition figure charged with treason over Odinga's "swearing in"

Kenyan opposition figure charged with treason over Odinga's

It also reinvigorated an opposition that had appeared unsure of its next step after a highly publicised rally last week at which leader Raila Odinga symbolically inaugurated himself as president.

A third suspended channel, Citizen TV, has not resumed broadcasts.

The party said the swearing-in is based on the annulled results of the August 8 presidential election, which they believe they won, but claim it was rigged to favour President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Four of Kenya's popular TV channels were switched off last week for attempting to broadcast the "inauguration" of opposition leader Raila Odinga as the "people's president".

The activists were trying to march to government offices in central Nairobi when police fired the gas, a Reuters witness said.

The unprecedented censorship sparked vocal criticism from the USA, the United Nations and ex-colonial ruler Britain.

Miguna was briefly released on bail on Saturday, but then immediately re-arrested when the government chose to ignore the court order commanding his release. Citizen TV, which was also shut down last week, remained off-air. "Their complicity would have led to thousands of deaths of innocent Kenyans."Broadcasters, fearing arrest, or confined themselves to their offices as plainclothes policemen circled their headquarters.Nerves over Odinga's symbolic protest had been frayed enough in government for a warning to be issued to local broadcasters the day before not to cover the event.Larry Madowo was one of those journalists".

Only two major broadcasters - NTV and KTN - are partially back on air nearly a week after their signals were shut down by the government.

Kenyatta won the August election, and won the repeat election in October as well after Odinga boycotted it, complaining it would not be fair.

Most of their statements have focused on the brief detention of three opposition politicians who took part in Odinga's ceremony, which occurred peacefully after the government withdrew police from the site.
