Tesco fraud trial thrown out as Rogberg suffers heart attack

Tesco fraud trial thrown out as Rogberg suffers heart attack”

Judge Deborah Taylor discharged the jury on Monday, saying that it would not be "right and proper" to continue the trial after Carl Rogberg, the former finance director of Tesco UK, suffered a heart attack last week, leaving him "in hospital awaiting surgery". A ruling by the judge prevented reporting of the abandoned trial until today.

The jury, which began hearing the case in September, was discharged after Carl Rogberg, 51, was taken to hospital last week.

"The position is this: very unfortunately and sadly Mr Rogberg has suffered from a heart attack and is now in hospital awaiting surgery". A retrial decision will be made March 2.

Rogberg, Tesco's former finance director, stands accused of fraud and false accounting alongside former commercial director for food John Scouler and former United Kingdom managing director Christopher Bush.

The case centres on Tesco's 2014 announcement to the stock exchange that its profit forecast had been overstated by 250 million pounds ($328 million), mainly due to supplier deals which were booked too early.

Tesco, one of the world's biggest retailers, has struggled to compete in Britain with low-priced rivals such as Aldi and Lidl.

Initially, the hope was that the case would finish before Christmas, but the trial has been beset by delays.
