"I asked her so many times in different ways, 'If they were nice with you?' " he said.

The alliance had later returned the two boys, aged eight and seven, to their father. "I wanted to push for co-parenting but their dad doesn't want to talk to me or didn't want to work anything out. So I planned to take my kids out of Lebanon illegally because I thought my options were very very slim to get custody of them or to bring them back home legally".

"We're all really excited", he said.

"They're going to take us into Turkey, and in Turkey we are going to meet someone from the Canadian Embassy".

"We still hope that we can work on the legalities, what happened and what went sideways, and the truth of what happened will come out eventually".

Jolly Bimbachi and Sean Moore had been held by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, the BBC reported.

Bimbachi and Moore, both residents of Chatham, Ontario, had flown to Lebanon late a year ago to reunite Bimbachi with her two children, Chatham politician Jeff Bultje said in a phone interview.

The official said Canada worked with Turkey to allow Ms. Bimbachi and Mr. Moore through the border with Syria, which is normally closed.

The original group was formed in 2012, but merged with four smaller factions in January 2017 to become Hay'at Tahrir al Sham, according to a report by the Washington, D.C. -based Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a think-tank.

Bimbachi and Moore were travelling together.

A senior Canadian government official, who spoke to The Globe and Mail on the condition of anonymity, said Jolly Bimbachi and Sean Allen Moore met with Canadian officials in Turkey on Monday after returning from three weeks in Syria. Bimbachi's been fighting to get her sons back ever since.

She told him, "they treat her like one from them".

In 2016, an Australian woman was detained in Lebanon for allegedly abducting her two children from their Lebanese father in an operation filmed by an Australian television crew.

Bimbachi and Moore were reportedly detained by a one-time al-Qaida offshoot that has some 31,000 fighters in Syria. She said her plan did not work out as intended and she came to Syria on December 31 with Moore.

Bimbachi said she had no regrets over her stay in Syria, noting that it gave her an appreciation for what people in that country live through.

"I have taught about what Syrians go through, I have done lectures in colleagues and I have helped a lot of Syrian refugees who came to Canada but I never got to actually feel what they go through", she said.
