AGLC to halt import of BC wine following proposals from BC gov't

AGLC to halt import of BC wine following proposals from BC gov't”

In response to an ongoing spat over the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, Premier Rachel Notely announced a British Columbia wine boycott on Tuesday.

The AGLC will also focus on direct-to-consumer sales, said Notley at an afternoon press conference at the Alberta Legislature. That amounts to about $70 million per year paid to B.C. wineries.

Notley said last week Alberta was ending any further talks on power purchase agreements with B.C.

At the time, Bilous called the ban non-trade compliant, and pointed out Saskatchewan could face up to $5 million in penalties if it didn't back down.

Tight capacity moving crude by pipeline and railway from landlocked Alberta generated last month the biggest price discount on the province's heavy oil in more than four years compared to the West Texas Intermediate CLc1 North American benchmark.

"This is one good step to waking B.C. up to the fact that they can't attack our industry without a response from us", she said.

Notley said the province now imports about 17 million bottles from B.C. wineries each year, or about 1.4 million cases.

Last week, Premier John Horgan said his government previously consulted with representatives in Alberta and Ottawa and that it was within B.C.'s jurisdiction to put regulations in place to protect public interest. "Not almost as important as the energy industry is to Alberta and Canada, but important nonetheless".

Of the B.C. wine already in the province, Notley said her government encourages Albertans to think about the province's energy workers. Notley says the decision to halt imports wasn't taken lightly. "Think about our province, and maybe choose some terrific Alberta craft beer instead".

"Alberta will not stand by and be the only province impacted by another province's refusal to play by the rules".

Notley said the federal government has tools to resolve the impasse and said she will continue to push Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on it.
