Cowichan man missing since 2007 identified by coroners service”

The BC Coroners Service says results from DNA analysis on remains found near Lake Cowichan on December 22 show they belong to Darreld Rayner.

Rayner, 52, went missing in May 2007.

Rayner's dog and coffee cup were later discovered by search and rescue crews, but his body was never found in the months-long search. Rayner became the subject of a missing person investigation and witnesses around southern Vancouver Island were interviewed.

The Special Investigations Unit with the BC Coroners Service announced their findings Tuesday afternoon.

The B.C. Coroners Service investigation said no other details are available as the investigation continues. The BC Coroners Service, Cowichan Search and Rescue and RCMP all took part in the recovery.

The BC Coroners Service says remains found in Lake Cowichan late previous year are those of a hiker who went missing more than a decade ago.
