Matt Smith to play Charles Manson in new film 'Charlie Says'”

Last month, it was reported that Doctor Who and The Crown star Matt Smith would be featuring in an upcoming biopic about notorious serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson from American Psycho director Mary Harron. The movie will focus on the three young women - Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten - who were initially sentenced to death following the infamous Manson murder case.

The death penalty was lifted in California and they were later sentenced to life imprisonment. Wever plays Karlene Faith, a young graduate student who was sent to teach them.

Fellow Brit Suki Waterhouse and Carla Gugino have also joined the cast, alongside Hannah Murray, Odessa Young, Marianne Rendon, Kaylie Carter, and Emmy Award victor Merritt Wever.

Guinevere Turner, Harron's American Psycho writing partner, will pen the screenplay, based on Ed Sanders' The Family and Faith's book, The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten. Until her passing past year, Faith remained an advocate for Leslie Van Houten, who had been up for parole over 20 times.

"Guinevere Turner's script brings a fresh and unique perspective to the infamous story of the Manson murders", Harron told THR.

The Brit, who is now portraying Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip in Netflix hit The Crown, has signed on to portray Manson in American Psycho director Mary Harron's Charlie Says, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Today, the news of his casting has been made official, along with the announcement of the film's title: Charlie Says.

Smith and Murray are repped by UTA and Troika, Gugino is repped by CAA, Rendon is repped by Gersh and McKegney Management, Wever is repped by Innovative Artists and Carter is repped by ICM.
