ME woman finds 3-inch lizard in bagged lettuce”

Michelle Carr, a nurse and new mother living in Kittery, Maine, displaying a dead lizard that she found and while eating a fresh salad. She said she washed the leaves, broke them apart by hand, put the lettuce in a bowl and added onions, grape tomatoes and an avocado.

The new mother of a 10-week-old newborn boy was enjoying a quick lunch on January 29 as she washed her lettuce, inverted it to drain, ripped it apart by hand and threw on some grape tomatoes, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

She said she does not usually shop at Shaw's or even buy pre-packaged lettuce.

It was the scaly, tail-less carcass of a lizard.

Carr, who's a nursing mom, said the situation was "very, very scary" because there's no way for her to know whether or not she ingested the tail.

Carr said she never purchases lettuce at the grocery store because she grows her own or shops at farmer's markets, but two weeks ago made a decision to take a trip to Shaw's in Portsmouth because she was sleep deprived from caring for her 10-week-old son and opted for the convenience of hitching a ride with her sister. She is concerned about salmonella and E. coli exposure for her and her baby. "It's taken me 10 years to become a mother and this could've been potentially harmful to my newborn". Carr's biologist friend believes the reptile is a blue-bellied lizard native to the west coast state.

The lettuce was distributed by a California company.

The nurse says she is still waiting on more answers after contacting the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and Shaw's.

"We took the complaint and passed it along to the FDA with the understanding it was being investigated", Leon told the Portsmouth Herald.

Teresa Edington, an external communication and community relations manager for Shaw's, said they are still investigating the issue and would not release the name of the supplier or the location where lettuce was harvested.

"It's not just something you read about in the papers", she told WCVB. We were notified of this matter and immediately informed the supplier.
