Aldi usurps Waitrose as nation's favourite supermarket - and Sainsbury's ranks last”

The annual Which? customer satisfaction survey found that shoppers were impressed by the German store's "fantastic prices", awarding it a five-star rating for value for money.

The German discounters pose a genuine threat to Britain's established "big four": Aldi and Lidl now account for £1 out of every £8 spent at United Kingdom supermarkets, according to research from Kantar Worldpanel.

Matthew Barnes, chief executive, United Kingdom and Ireland at Aldi, said: "We're over the moon to be named the best supermarket in the Which? annual customer satisfaction survey voted for by United Kingdom shoppers".

Elsewhere, Sainsbury's ended up bottom of the list, with a spokesperson pointing to confusing methodology of the ranking system and highlighting how it beat Aldi in categories like store appearance, queuing time, staff availability and product range.

It is the second time Aldi has come top in Which?'s annual survey, previously taking the top spot in 2014.

In third was rival Lidl, while Waitrose which won for the previous three years, fell to fourth place.

Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's all rank poorly in the 2018 supermarket satisfaction survey from the consumer watchdog Which?, trailing behind the budget chain.

Waitrose was given a two star value for money rating compared to Aldi and Lidl's five, after 6,800 people were surveyed.

They said: 'As Which? itself says, many customers praised our top-quality produce'.

This category was based on the convenience of delivery slots, the choice of substitute items and the service of the drivers.

Data from research group Kantar Worldpanel on Tuesday showed sales at Tesco grew by 2.6 percent in the last 12 weeks but all of Britain's four biggest supermarkets had lost market share to Aldi and Lidl.

"We look forward to welcoming many more new customers to enjoy the Iceland experience, both in-store and online, in the year ahead".
