Cancellations expected at London City Airport as Second World War bomb found”

At 10pm, the decision was taken to put an exclusion zone in place to allow the Royal Navy to deal with the explosive but that meant flights would be affected.

Cancellations are expected at London City Airport on Monday after an unexploded Second World War bomb was uncovered nearby.

A 214-metre exclusion zone has been set up as a precaution by the Metropolitan Police, and roads in the area have been closed.

The device was found at George V Dock during work at London City Airport on Sunday morning.

The bomb was found during routine work at the dock which runs alongside the airport's runway.

The airport was shut at 22:00 and the Met said it was working with the Royal Navy to remove the device.

"There will also be disruption to inbound and outbound flights during the operation".

London City Airport advised all passengers to check with their airlines.

Part of the Docklands Light Railway has been suspended and some roads remain closed, Transport for London have said. "Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport until further notice", the statement continued.

Royal Navy specialists established an exclusion zone of more than 200 meters (650 feet) to handle the situation, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. "As a result, London City Airport is now closed", a London City Airport tweet read.
