Instagram testing screenshot warnings in Stories

Instagram testing screenshot warnings in Stories”

Basically, Instagram Stories is the exact same feature as was seen earlier on Snapchats where it was called as Snap. Instagram is testing the Screenshot Alert for stories.

Until now, users have been able to record or screenshot other people's "Stories" secretly on Instagram, without being detected. Thank you, Instagram for the warning.

It seems that users will get a free pass on the first time, where they will be prompted by a popup that lets them know that the "next time" they take a screenshot or even a screen recording of a Story, that person will know that they've done it.

Users who are included in the test are shown an alert that the next time they take a screenshot of a friend's story, the friend will be able to see that.

Instagram testing screenshot warnings in Stories

Instagram has acknowledged in a statement saying that, "we are always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you".

Most probably Instagram is testing this feature to see if it has any prominent impact on the user engagement, before finalizing the decision whether the company should roll out the feature for all users or not.

Prior to this test the only screenshot notifications on Instagram were when someone took a screenshot of a private direct message. When somebody takes a screenshot of one of your "Stories", a sun-shaped symbol will appear alongside their name in the Story Views section, according to The Independent. There's also a chance of some users ending up watching lesser stories over time. The irony here being, Instagram themselves seem to have copied (yet again!) Snapchat's feature that warns user when someone takes screenshot of their photos and videos.

TechCrunch noted that rolling out screenshot alerts would effectively align Instagram with Snapchat, with screenshots in a direct message causing a notification to be shown to the sender, while screenshots of stories are shown in the list of viewers.
