North Korean leader's sister ends Olympic visit, leaving South to mull offer

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, headed home Sunday after a whirlwind trip to the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Last month, the North agreed with South Korea to send 22 athletes and a 230-strong cheering squad to the winter Games.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who attended Friday's opening ceremony along with the North Koreans, said "no daylight" existed between the United States, South Korea and Japan on the need to isolate North Korea.

A rare invitation to Pyongyang for South Korea's president marked Day Two of the North Korean Kim dynasty's southern road tour, part of an accelerating diplomatic thaw that included some Korean liquor over lunch and the shared joy of watching a "unified" Korea team play hockey at the Olympics.

That is the assessment of a former South Korean government minister and political experts who say the North has used the Games to drive a wedge between South Korea and its US ally and to potentially ease pressure on its sanctions-crippled state.

Her presence helped the theme of Korean unity to dominate the opening ceremony as the two Koreas marched under one flag.

Speaking to the Washington Post aboard Air Force Two on his way home from the Winter Olympics in South Korea, Pence-who avoided any direct contact with North Korean officials attending the Games-said Washington would keep up its "maximum pressure campaign" against Pyongyang but would be open to possible talks at the same time.

Camera flashes; mobs of reporters: Through it all, Kim has maintained a placid smile - and despite Pence's stated intention to reinforce North Korea's isolation during his Olympic visit, the sister of the repressive regime's leader seems to have spent at least as much time with Moon as Pence did.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday rejected any suggestion that even a temporary warming of relations between the North and South could drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington.

South Korea accommodated both the North Korean government officials and members of the art troupe at the Walkerhill hotel in Seoul. It was built in the 1960s under the government of late anti-communist dictator Park Chung-hee as a luxury facility for US troops stationed in South Korea.

Moon joined Pence at Pyeongchang's ice rink where they viewed the women's short-track speedskating together, and exchanged pleasantries and an embrace. The U.S will not allow the propaganda charade by the North Korean regime to go unchallenged on the world stage.

Past "charm offensives" have been interpreted as North Korea trying to recoup from crippling sanctions on their nuclear program, or trying to drive a wedge between Seoul and its USA ally. The Koreans were crushed by Switzerland, 8-0.

She's not what we expected: not stiff, but smiling. But Pence's time sidestepping the North Koreans at the Olympics was punctuated by awkward, stoic photos and no-shows.

Moon was quoted by the news agency as saying, "The current visit of the delegation of the north side created a spark of improving the inter-Korean relations and ensuring peace on the Korean peninsula".

South Korea may also need to persuade traditional allies the United States and Japan, which have raised concerns that the North is attempting to use its outreach as a release valve for global pressure.

North Korea is under a heavy United Nations sanctions regime which was originally targeted at stopping the proliferation of arms and nuclear and missile technologies, but has become more all-encompassing after its accelerated missile testing.
