Pelosi wraps up 8-hour speech on immigration”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gave the longest House floor speech since at least 1909 on Wednesday, talking for more than eight hours to demand a vote on legislation to protect young immigrants from deportation.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, she added: "We achieved the recognition of what the Dreamers mean to America". The Office of the House Historian said it was the longest continuous speech in the chamber on record, AP reported.

USA politician Nancy Pelosi delivered an eight-hour "filibuster" to call for a vote on protecting "Dreamer" immigrants facing the threat of deportation.

Democrats on the left, especially members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, were frustrated to see a budget deal negotiated that resolved virtually every Democratic priority except a resolution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, a policy that protected young undocumented immigrants who came to the USA as children that President Donald Trump made a decision to terminate in September.

Ryan said that Democrats should acknowledge that "some people are going to get a little bump (from the Trump tax cut)" but that under a Democratic plan, "they'd be getting hundreds and hundreds more than under the Republican plan, and we would have been able to pay for it, by asking the wealthy and corporations to pay more".

"I'm not a loyal Democrat", Linda Sarsour, a political activist who co-chaired the 2017 Women's March, declared during a fiery rally near Capitol Hill. "They are a reflection of all the immigrants that have come before".

Pelosi also used her time to talk about the Declaration of Independence, the country's founders and even suggested at one point that lawmakers should "just pray all day".

"Why should we in the House be treated in such a humiliating way when the Republican Senate leader has given that opportunity in a bipartisan way to his membership? That's something that's going to have long-term implications", said Murshed Zaheed, political director for the progressive group CREDO.

"House Democrats have a voice here and we must be heard", Pelosi wrote.

"There will be a reckoning", said Ben Wikler, Washington director for the liberal group MoveOn.

Pelosi's speech, broadcast nationally in part by cable news channels, comes as she is set to spend the rest of the week huddling with colleagues over how to prepare for this year's congressional elections.
