Unveiling of Jaya portrait irks Oppn”

The opposition parties on Sunday decried the move to unveil the portrait of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the Tamil Nadu Assembly with the PMK even threatening to move the court, while BJP supported the move, saying Jayalalithaa deserved the honour since she had been CM six times.

Ms Jayalalithaa's portrait was the 11th leader to adorn the walls of the Assembly.

Amid expectations that Prime Minister Modi would inaugurate/unveil Jayalalithaa's portrait, it was announced on Friday by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu that a portrait of the deceased chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa would be inaugurated by Speaker Dhanapal within the Legislative Assembly's premises.

However, the main Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress did not attend the ceremony.

DMK working president MK Stalin termed Monday as a "black day" in the history of the Assembly, and tweeted, "This move has brought down the dignity and sanctity of the House".

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May previous year to be the chief guest for the unveiling. "Since the case will be taken up for hearing, the government has organised the event in a hurried manner before 9.30am". However, with no reply forthcoming, the CM made a decision to preside over the function himself on Monday.

Cooperation Minister Sellur Raju said Jayalalithaa was a revolutionary leader and she deserved to be in the hall of fame.

Jayalalithaa didn't allow Sasikala to stay at her Poes Garden residence out of humanitarian concern but to amass assets and launder her ill-gotten wealth, the court said.

The BJP in Tamil Nadu said there was nothing wrong in unveiling the portrait.

In this unique context of apparent crime and ultimate conviction, any undue glorifying of a convicted person (case abated just because she had died) will only set a very bad precedent as the late chief minister was convicted in the case.

DMDK chief Vijayakanth has also opposed the move along with Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chief S Thirunavukkarasar.

Jayalalithaa now joins Mahatma Gandhi, Periyar EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai, K Kamaraj, Thiruvalluvar, BR Ambedkar, Muthuramalinga Thevar, C Rajagopalachari, Quaide Millath and her mentor MG Ramachandran as the first woman on the walls of the assembly.
