Fans removed from game for remarks aimed at black National Hockey League player

Fans removed from game for remarks aimed at black National Hockey League player”

It was confirmed after the incident that four total fans were ejected from the game in the third period due to the racist taunts.

An bad incident during Saturday's Capitals-Blackhawks game in Chicago resulted in a group of fans being ejected after directing racist taunts at Washington's Devante Smith-Pelly.

Smith-Pelly, who is black, was sitting in the penalty box during the game between the Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. Smith-Pelly shouted back at the fans through the glass, stick in hand. "There's no place for it", Trotz said.

While every non-racist person would love to a see day when stuff like this doesn't happen, the fact of the matter is the world has a long ways to go, and ridding it of ignorance won't be easy.

A Capitals team official told the Washington Post that the spectators chanted "basketball, basketball, basketball", at Smith-Pelly. Coach Barry Trotz said the player was "a little upset". There's no place for it. Athletes in our country don't deserve that.

"We are committed to providing an inclusive environment for everyone who attends our games and these actions will never be tolerated", the statement read, in part.

Smith-Pelly is one of about 30 black players now in the league. That's where the 25-year-old forward, who is one of the league's few black players, was targeted with racially charged comments from fans seated near the box. He has seven goals and 16 points in 54 games this season. He tried to go into the stands. Just because I'm a professional hockey player: they just don't understand.

The Chicago Blackhawks also released a statement following the incident.

The NHL has designated February as its "Hockey Is For Everyone" month, which "uses the game of hockey to drive positive social change and foster more inclusive communities". So it's really lonely in that sense.
