Consumers Energy To Close All Coal Plants By 2040”

The Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council (MEIBC) today applauded Consumers Energy for announcing it will reduce carbon emissions 80 percent by 2040 and make significant investments in clean energy.

The company will still use natural gas and hydropower. The utility says it is upgrading its natural gas infrastructure around the state.

"Our actions speak louder than words, and we have a track record of doing more than is required", says Patti Poppe, president and CEO of Consumers Energy and CMS Energy.

"So much of what we believe in as Michiganders is going up north and maybe spending time at the lake, fishing hunting, and those natural resources that MI enjoys", said Carey. It wants the state to use 30 percent renewable energy by 2030.

Clean energy and environmental advocates lost a similar fight in 2012, when DTE and Consumers Energy opposed and voters rejected 62 percent to 38 percent a proposed constitutional amendment for a 25 percent renewable requirement by 2025.

After the Obama administration proposed a clean power plan, DTE and Consumers Energy executives warned in 2015 about a possible "energy shortfall issue" that could be caused by the closure of coal-fired plants. Commission approval will be needed before the utility can proceed. Consumers Energy says that's because renewable sources are less expensive than burning fossil fuels.

Began moving away from coal by closing seven of its twelve coal-fired generating plants in 2016 - more than any investor-owned utility that year, resulting in a 38 percent carbon intensity reduction from 2008 levels.

Its long-term strategy will reduce the company's carbon emissions by 80 percent, Poppe told the AP. "We have the ability to make a major difference for MI by being a true steward of Michigan's unbelievable natural resources".

"In the past, people believed that we had to choose between affordable and clean energy", Poppe said. Our job is to serve customers.

Consumers Energy owns two wind turbine farms and buys power from a third. In addition the company utilizes energy from the Apple Blossom wind park; and co-owns the Ludington Clean Pumped Storage facility, a hydroelectric plant on Lake Michigan.

Along with its renewable energy plan, Consumers Energy also announced a five-year plan for reducing its environmental footprint that includes saving 1 billion gallons of water, reducing waste sent to landfills by 35 percent and restoring or improving 5,000 acres of land.
